What is Humour? What makes a picture funny?

The dictionaries say:

  • temper: a characteristic (habitual or relatively temporary) state of feeling; "whether he praised or cursed me depended on his temper at the time"; "he was in a bad humor"
  • wit: a message whose ingenuity or verbal skill or incongruity has the power to evoke laughter
  • humor: (Middle Ages) one of the four fluids in the body whose balance was believed to determine your emotional and physical state; "the humors are blood and phlegm and yellow and black bile"
  • humor: the quality of being funny; "I fail to see the humor in it"
  • humor: the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor"
  • humor: put into a good mood
  • wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
  • Humor (humour in British English) is the ability or quality of people, objects or situations to invoke feelings of amusement in other people. The term encompasses any form of entertainment or human communication which invokes such feelings, or which makes people laugh or feel happy.
  • Working Class humour is hard-hitting deadpan black comedy reflecting the idea that you laugh at what you can't change. Middle class find it too brash and lacking respect of their status. Of course the middle/upper class also harbours humour but it is less threatening or cheeky when directed between each other - which would be affront to the pecking order. ...
The study of humor and what makes something "funny" has been tackled by many throughout the ages.

"Human beings appear to laugh at pain and suffering, at their own discomfort and frailty and weaknesses," according to Bernie Allen, a long-time professional comedian.

Another professional comedian, Alan King, once attempted to answer that question by citing Freud and pseudo-intellectualizing about the nature of comedy.

But I believe that Bernie is correct, if you add one more part and that is all good jokes have a hook and a twist First, you bring the listener along a mental road that leads them to develop one set of expectations for what is going to happen next. Then at the key moment, you throw them a twist that denies them that expectation and carries them in an entirely different direction. I believe that most jokes can be analyzed and will conform to that theory.

Same with pictures....its the unexpected, the outrageous, the maliciously spiteful

, the cheeky that we find funny!

Have Fun!!
